This section of the website contains network design examples for lan design. Each example understands the necessary hardware switches along with basic IP addressing required to setup specific LAN network requirements. Switches along with the necessary specification required for different users on the LAN network like 8, 10, 20, 40, 100 etc is understood. LAN network Design for 10 Computers

To design a network for 10 computers, a switch which has atleast 10 ports. Switches comes with 5, 8, 24 and 48 port configuration. Two options are suggested.

Option 1

1. Purchase or use a 5 Port and 8 Port switch. In case you are purchasing switches , it would be advisable to purchase gigabit switches for better performance and speed as it gives 1000 Mbps per switch port as opposed to a Fast ethernet switches which provides 100 Mbps per switch port.

2. Interconnect the 5 port and 8 port switches using appropriate cables (Cross over cable).

3. Connect the PC’s / Systems on the network to the respective switch ports.

4. Setup a private IP address range from 192.168.1.1 – 192.168.1.10 for all systems on the network.

5. After connection, test basic connectivity between the systems using ping.

Option 2

1. Purchase or use a 24 Port Switch

2. Connect the PCs / Systems on the network to the respective switch ports. and configure the same IP address range as provided above.

3. Test basic connectivity.

Options Compared

Considering future expansion plans, it would be recommended to purchase or use a 24 Port Gigabit Switch as the combination of 5 port and 8 port would can support a maximum of 13 systems.

LAN network design with 8 users

A network has to be designed which has 8 users. The IP addressing for systems on the network and the quantity of network components has to be decided.

As there are 8 users, an 8 port switch would suffice. All the users would connect to the 8 port switch.

TCP/IP address: 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.8

Recommended switch – D-LINK DES-1008A 8-Port 10/100 Desktop Switch

LAN network design with 20 users

A network has to be designed which has 20 users. The IP addressing for systems on the network and the quantity of network components has to be decided.

As there are 20 users, a 24 port switch would suffice. All the users would connect to the 20 port switch.

TCP/IP address: 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.20

Recommended switch – D-Link DES-1024D 24-Port Fast Ethernet 10/100 Desktop Switch

LAN network design with 40 users.

A network has to be designed which has 40 users. The IP addressing for systems on the network and the quantity of network components has to be decided.

As there are 40 users, a 48 port switch would suffice. All the users would connect to the 48 port switch.

TCP/IP address: 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.40

Recommended switch – TP-LINK TL-SF1048 48-port 10/100M Switch

LAN network design with 100 users

A network has to be designed which has 100 users. The IP addressing for systems on the network and the quantity of network components has to be decided.

As there are 100 users, 2 nos of 48 port switch and 1 nos of 8 port switches recommended. 1 port each on the switches would be used for interconnecting the switches using cross over cable. Reaming there would be a total of 47 ports each (On the 48 port switches) and 7 ports on the 8 port switch, which can be used for connecting the systems.

TCP/IP address: 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.100
