Network Design Examples

This section of the website contains network design examples. The below scenarios are examples of designing network for various network requirements. Tips on how to setup the network, components and hardware required, TCP/IP addressing which can be used is analyzed.

Example 1 – Network Design with 100 users in 1 building

Network Requirement

There are 100 users in a building. It is required that a LAN network is designed for the user’s computers to communicate with each other. The appropriate components, vendors, IP address schema is to be identified.

Solution

To setup a LAN network, a switch is required. For 100 users, 100 ports on the switch are required. Switches typically are available as 24 or 48 port. So to accommodate 100 users, 3 nos of 48 port switches would be required. Private IP addressing of 192.168.2.0/24 can be used. The users can be assigned IP address in the range, 192.168.1.1 -192.168.1.100. The Cisco catalyst switch, Cisco Catalyst 2960S-48TS-L ( 3nos) can be used to setup the network.

Example 2- Network design with 100 users in 2 buildings

Requirement

There are two buildings in a campus. The distances between the buildings are 80 meters. There are 100 users each, in both the buildings. A LAN network has to be designed for interconnecting the user’s computers in the different buildings. The appropriate components, vendors, IP address schema is to be identified.

Solution

As there are 200 users in total, 200 ports on the switches would be required. 10 nos of 24 port switches are required in total. 5 nos of 25 port switches is setup in each of the buildings. The switches should also have uplink ports for interconnecting the switches in the different buildings. Copper uplink ports would suffice, since the distance between the buildings are less than 100 meters.

Private IP addressing of 192.168.2.0/24 can be used. The users in building 1 is assigned with IP addresses in the range, 192.168.1.1 -192.168.1.100 and users in building 2, is assigned with IP addresses in the range, 192.168.1.101-192.168.1.201. The Cisco catalyst switch 2960S-F24PS-L (24 ports) can be used to setup the network.

Example -3 – Network Design with wireless network access

Network Requirement

There are 50 users in a building. All the 50 users are in a single room, which is about 2000 sq ft. A LAN network has to be designed for interconnecting the user’s computers through a wireless network. The appropriate components, vendors, IP address schema is to be identified.

Solution

Wireless access points are required to setup a wireless network. The computers should also be installed with wireless network cards, known as wireless PCI cards. A switch is required, to which the access points would be connected. The IP address range of 192.168.1.0/24 can be used. The IP addresses, 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.50 is used for the user’s computers. The IP addresses, 192.168.1.51, 192.168.1.52 and 192.168.1.53 is used for the access points. 1 nos of 24 port switch and 3 nos of access points are proposed. 3 nos are proposed for better and higher signal quality and load balancing for the users. Linksys WAP610N is proposed as the access point. Cisco Catalyst 2960S-F24PS-L is proposed the switch. TP-LINK TL-WN781ND 150Mbps Wireless PCI cards can be used on the computers for wireless connectivity.
